Susie Goold
Coach to White Squad 1 & 2, Tadpoles, Development 1 and Blue Squad
I started swimming lessons at the age of about 3 because I was one half of badly behaved, hyperactive twins and my poor mother needed an activity to wear us out. I learnt to swim at Darrick Wood Pool in Orpington and by the time I was 7, I had passed my 1,500m and honours badges. My step-dad, who taught me and my sister, suggested we join Beckenham as it was the best club in the area.
I joined Beckenham Ladies and went into the Tadpoles group at the old Beckenham Road Baths – pool 3.
I made my first Kent County qualifying time at 10 and swam for Beckenham, under some of the best coaches in the country, until I was 18. I am still in regular contact with many of my old team mates and swam alongside some top level swimmers, including some bloke called Tony Beckley.
I was selected for Bromley Borough, Kent County and English Schools Division 11. I was part of my school team of 2 sets of twins who were English Schools Relay Champions twice. I also won medals at Southern County level (individual and relay) and swam in the Nationals on numerous occasions but only in relays. I had my best year at the age of 16 where I won my first individual county title. I have also played for the Beckenham Ladies Water Polo team to National League level.
I started teaching swimming at the age of 17 which was helping out with the Tadpoles at the old Beckenham Road Baths – pool 3. I passed all of my ASA Swimming Teaching qualifications and my ASA Preliminary Coaches Certificate by the time I was 20 and taught swimming at The Walnuts in Orpington along side my twin sister, until I got married and had my first child in 1996.
I had a break from teaching to have my four children and work in our family business, but came back to it in 2006 which is when I started coaching. I got involved with the club after my mother became President and my eldest three children joined the club and last year took my ASA/UKCC Level 2 Coaches Course.
I had a fantastic life being a swimmer and loved every minute of it, even swimming 5.30-7.30am every morning, having a haystack hairstyle and always smelling of chlorine and I hope to be able to pass on some of my experience to another generation.
