While the rest of the world went into a credit crunch, 2008 prooved to be a very successful year for Beckenham Swimming Club in crunching their opponents, here are a selection of photos from events throughout 2008.

 

16th January 2008

Beckenham Swimming Club at the Brighton Open Meet, look out for the Brighton Swimming Club Tom Handley OPEN MEET 2009 on the Fixtures page.

 

10th February 2008

Beckenham Swimming Club at the Orpington Ojays Open Meet, look out for The Novices Challenge, hosted by Orpington Ojays Swimming Club in February 2009 at the Walnuts Sports Centre, on the Fixtures page.

 

 

Michael Gunning. Top award for best 13-year old boy in Kent County Swimming 2008.

 

27th March 2008

A total of 59 Beckenham swimmers took part in 458 races, which ranged from 50m events to 1500m. Between them, they won 130 golds, 93 silvers and 75 bronzes, as well as countless fourth, fifth and sixth place medals. In last year’s championships, Beckenham brought home 106 golds, 72 silvers and 78 bronze medals. The Kent County Championships are back again in February/March 2009.

11th June 2008

Outgoing President Doreen Somerville hands over to Richard Collins at the AGM on 11th June 2008.

Presentation of Jack Petchey awards to a number of BSC swimmers at the AGM on 11th June 2008; this was carried out by Kay Grimshaw, President of London Region and later this year to be President of the ASA itself. Winners were: Tom Cordrey, Marlon Gasparotto, Gabriel Dada, Tom Cart, Rahul Bagga, Jade Donaldson, Barclay Bram-Shoemaker, George Chan and Emily Grant. The Leaders Award went to Cilla Daniel.

 

21st June 2008

Beckenham Swimming Club success at the London Youth Games, the junior and senior girl’s team won the overall girls trophy with a large points margin and the junior and senior boys came 5th overall.

 

21st June 2008

Beckenham 11 to 14 year old boys win Gold in the 4 by 100m freestyle relay and Silver in the 4 by 100m Medley relay, in the London regional this has resulted in them qualifying for the Nationals at Sheffield in July 2008. The Team is from left to right Gabriel Dada, Marlon Gasparotto, Jack Brown, Michael Gunning.

6th July 2008

Emily and most of the other Beckenham swimmers at Haslemere Open Meet (Level 3) “warm down” after the event!

 

 

20th July 2008

Jackie Elliott, Beckenham SC Masters swimmer, swam in the Brighton Swimming Club Pier to Pier race in July 2008 and came 7th in the Veteran competition. There is a junior event and it is still the Juniors who win overall but a lot of the swimmers are older. It is perfect training for all you Waterpolo players out there! Lets enter some teams next year!!

11th August 2008

- Ellen Gandy Kent Olympian 2008.

Hailing from Beckenham Swimming Club, Ellen Gandy made her Olympic debut in the 200m butterfly in Beijing. Ellen came seventh in her heat for the 200m butterfly with a time of 2:08:98 which put her into the semifinal where she came eighth with a time of 2:10:60.

 

 

 

30th August 2008.

Beckenham SC reunion of swimmers from the 80’s and coach Tony Ross on Saturday 30th August. In picture are Stan Fraser, Steve Chick, Lucie Davis (Earl), Nicola Mellor (Somers), Liz Burns, Sam Harrison, Tony Ross, Mimi, Susie, Kate Marley and Peter Chick.


 

 

3rd September 2008.

Steph King was nominated for the outstanding achievement award after the London Youth Games as she won gold in all three of her events. Steph was selected as the winner and her prize was a four day trip to Beijing for the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games.

10th October 2008.

Beckenham Swimmers who were part of the Bromley London Youth Games team were invited to a reception with the Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Denise Reddin, at the Civic Centre in Bromley.

 

 

30th October 2008

The week long training camp in Cyprus, was aimed to provide access to a 50m facility Training in the continued absence of Crystal Palace, ran incredibly smoothly for those attending from Top Squad. Look out for a full report from Coral Bay in the next edition of 'Our Club'.

 

 

13th December 2008. National League Round 3

Capt Tone and his gang of pirates! The Beckenham 'A' Team plunder their way to success in the National League. The Final, will see the Top 20 swimming club teams from up and down the country competing.

 

7th December 2008

Beckenham were runners up in the ASA under 14s Inter County Water Polo Championships. From left to right Jia Ping Lee, Lauren Spencer-Boyce Sophie Simpson, Emily Grant, Matilda Williams Henry Knight, and Emily Monaghan-Coombs.

Father Christmas spotted on the roof-top of the George Inn Beckenham. Merry Christmas to everyone associated with Beckenham Swimming Club and look forward to continued success in 2009!
