Role of the Water Polo Secretary
Training
Liaising with the pools to confirm training time and checking invoices to ensure correct payment.
Coaching
Ensuring that all training sessions are covered/coached by a suitable member of the club. The secretary may be required to do some occasional coaching. As the section essentially coaches itself, one responsibility is to make sure the coaching rota is fair. The secretary should also try to get as many people involved in the coaching as possible in order to build a “pool” of expertise and to build a contingency against the retirement of key personnel.
The secretary should also ensure that the appropriate people have the appropriate certificates, for example ensuring the coaches are “rescue test” qualified, or child protection qualifications. Enabling members to receive the relevant training for their roles so that the members receive the highest standard coaching possible within the water polo section.
Membership
A major responsibility for the secretary is to facilitate and organise the renewal process in the summer. This involves getting registration forms out and back, verifying fee receipts and chasing up outstanding items. The secretary must liaise with the treasurer regarding ASA registration.
Committee Meetings
The water polo secretary is expected to attend the general swimming club committee meetings to make sure that the water polo section has a presence and is not forgotten in Beckenham Swimming Club decision making.
The secretary should also chair a water polo sub-committee. This is a less formal committee and is not necessarily required on a regular basis. All decisions made in these meetings should be communicated back to the swimming club at the general committee meeting.
Leagues and fixtures
This role is currently filled by the section joint head coach, but this is something of which the secretary should have a working knowledge.
Budget
The secretary should maintain a budget for the water polo section.
Extras
The water polo secretary needs to work closely with the club treasurer. He/She also needs to stay visible within the polo section and help out where required in addition to the defined responsibilities. |
